Named after the building it’s housed in, not the bathing suit, the Bikini 25Hours hotel is located between Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Zoological Garden. The floor to ceiling window of my Jungle M room looked out over swinging Orangutans and treetops that stretched as far as the golden angel atop the Victory Column near Tiergarten. More than any other hotel, I was aware of the surrounding sounds as reinforcement of the theme: Urban Jungle. The constant bird call and distant trumpeting of elephants felt more game reserve than European capital. Wifi is included, as is the use of Minis and bicycles but the early bird gets the bike. The name of each bike also offers a little cultural insight, mine was Langer Lulatsch – the nickname for the Berliner Funkturm. For breakfast on the cold table was a rack of dripping honeycomb, vanilla quark and DIY muesli, seasonal jams and braided challah. And on the hot side, currywurst (baby bratwurst and house-made tomato sauce) or creamy, vanilla-speckled rice pudding sour cherry compote. All eaten while looking out over the ‘Jungle’.
